Developing a Workspace

By Emma • Nov 18th, 2008 • Category: The Blog

Since I started freelance writing about 2 1/2 months ago I’ve been using the kitchen table as my workspace. This has proved to be a disaster. With two children (ages 1 and 3) it has been practically impossible to work uninterrupted. In order to streamline my work (and my home) it’s time to develop an official workspace.

I have two options, an unused bedroom and my own bedroom. Ideally, the unused bedroom could be set up as an office. But the kids have been playing in there and they have a hard time keeping out. It’s also where our guests stay when they visit, so if I set up there it’s possible I may have to rearrange things when people visit.

The second option, my own bedroom, seems much more appealing. Except that there’s one drawback – my husband sleeps there as well! He’s a very light sleeper and if I had to type into the evening it would no doubt keep him awake. Not to mention the desk light and the tunes I listen to as I write. While theoretically that would be the best space, I’d hate to encroach on his sleep time, as he makes sure I have the time to do my writing.

It seems, at the moment, the coffee shop down the street is the best place to go writing. Good lighting, plenty of coffee and no kids! I also work best in the morning, so getting there at 6am and working till noon is lovely. I may actually be able to get more done. The best part is then I can come home to my kids and spend quality time with them, instead of trying to juggle both responsibilities at the same time. But eventually I do need to get that workspace developed at home, before they start charging me rent at the coffee shop!
